Who would have thought? That the '80's prom flower and get well cheapie...

(I can not believe I just posted that photo in my blog dedicated to beautiful flowers. I DID NOT make this bouquet! But it's a great example of the whole problem...)

would finally grow up into something so wondrous?

Yep! The hottest trend around? CARNATIONS people! Dense and ruffly, and dare I say CHIC? They just need to be used carefully--in luscious, full mounds, without even a hint of babies breath or baskets for miles. But then, I still can't think of any reason to have that dreaded duo of a train wreck around!

You mean you don't love The Basket of Cheer? Do these beautiful flowers not bring you quite enough cheer? Is that the problem? Perhaps if they attached a foil helium balloon to the handle, would that help?

It always amazes me when people manage to make flowers look bad. I mean, you have to be trying really hard to make flowers look that awful!

I love some of the carnation trends that are around just now, but for me the colours have to be just right, I only like white, pink or palest green carnations.

P&P--Oh of course! The missing foil balloon. Don't tell me that this floral abomination is worldwide--I figured it was another one of those tacky American things! They do this in Scotland too?

Great balls of flowers! These are lovely!

Oh yes! It's almost impossible to find tasteful floral arrangements mail order in the UK, most of them look just like that! I have found one online company that sends boxes of flowers and they are who I use when I want to send flowers as the arrangements that are available are so hideous!

Is this another trend thanks to Carrie Bradshaw? I think she liked carnations, too. :)

Thanks Diana! And P&P...such a shame with all the great gardening that goes on in the UK. Maybe I need to move across the pond. And Jess--I'm sure you're right! They seem so Carrie, don't they?

I used to be so against carnations, until I started seeing them is these beautiful, tapered display. My view are a changin'!

Alexa, your blog is so inspiring! I'm so glad I found you too. (Saw your comment on This Is Glamorous and randomly clicked over.) As soon as I have some time, I'm gonna comb thru your archives.

So FUNNY that you mention I Was Told There'd Be Cake.... when I saw this post about carnations, I thought of one of my favorite lines from the book, the one where she compares firing a volunteer to breaking up with the nice guy who keeps bringing you cheap flowers. "Carnations again. You bastard." I've had carnations on the brain for weeks, talking with friends about how they CAN be fabulous. This proves it!
